On the Farm


Nestled in the Appalachian mountains of central Pennsylvania, Thistle Creek Farms has been producing high quality grass fed beef for more than a quarter century.  Our main goal is to raise grass-fed beef on the best grasses from around the world. Our grasses come from The  Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, and Romania. They provide a great tasting product as well as the health benefits of beef raised on grass.

We got into sustainable agriculture even before it became a popular way of caring for the land and environment. We turn more and more cropland back to grass every year. Our soils are teaming with the micro-organisms that nature intended.

Our three herds total approximately 500 beef animals, and about 150 sheep. The work crew on a normal day is George, Leo the stallion, Mac, Finn and Hemp, the border collies. Hemp is retired and Finn is just a pup so Mac does most of the daily cow work. Our herds are each moved one or more times a day to fresh grass, a task made delightful by the dogs' enthusiasm. I wrote the following poem about Hemp and Taff (deceased) after a cold winter morning several years ago.

Our dogs are part of our family, they live by the motto of play hard but work harder!
